Technology changes fast – to keep it from going to landfill and harvesting the valuable elements we’ve got to move even faster. Leading TV & broadband provider Virgin Media approached us with a mountainous challenge (literally), that demand we design and build new systems to recover and recycle first generations digital TV tuner boxes. Thankfully one of our values is enthusiasm, and we’re always ready to energetically play our part to save planet Earth. Working closely with Virgin Media we did the right thing, that led to us employing the same unique recovery and recycling system across the sector.
What was the challenge?
Existing partners had previously asked if we could widen our recovery operation from cellular accessories and devices to other materials and products such as laptops, digital TV tuners and wireless broadband routers. When the telecoms provider presented us with the challenge of recovering their first generation of digital TV tuner boxes we just couldn’t say no to such an important task.

How did we overcome it?
Genuine Solutions expertise and processes allowed it to support leading telecoms brand’s sustainability agenda. With the partnership scoped and worked out, we invested significantly in cutting edge technology so that we could remove hard disk drives (HDD’s) from the set-top boxes and fully test them for re-use.
The test rack also provides full and secure data erasure to military standards. The HDD is the only component that is recovered for reuse. All other materials are stripped down and segregated into individual material groups for recycling by approved downstream partners.
Plastics, metals and PCB materials are all sent to separate licensed recovery specialists for secure destruction and precious metal recovery, ensuring not only a fully environmentally compliant process but also maintaining a maximum revenue return to our client at all times.
What were the results?
Since starting this operation we have recovered a massive 1.5 million units.
We now proudly supply these recycling services to other TV & broadband competitors as the the first company in the UK to be approved industry-wide.
